Over 160 People Still Missing After Texas Floods as Officials Vow Relentless Search Efforts

As devastating floodwaters continue to recede across central Texas, the full extent of the catastrophe is coming into focus. At a press conference held Tuesday, July 8, Texas Governor Greg Abbott confirmed that at least 109 people have died and 161 remain missing in the wake of historic flooding that struck the region over the Fourth of July weekend.

Among the hardest-hit areas was Camp Mystic, a longtime Christian girls’ summer camp nestled along the banks of the Guadalupe River in the Texas Hill Country. The camp reported that 27 girls and counselors were initially unaccounted for after the river rapidly rose and flooded cabins on Friday, July 4.

By Tuesday, five campers and one counselor from Camp Mystic were still missing.

“The primary job right now continues to be locating everybody who was affected by this flood,” Gov. Abbott said. “We will not stop until every missing person is accounted for.”

Abbott grew emotional when speaking about the tragedy at Camp Mystic. “Nothing is as heart-wrenching as hearing the stories of what the girls around here — especially the girls at Camp Mystic — went through,” he said.

Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows echoed the sentiment, calling the flooding “unimaginable.”
“It is hard to comprehend the amount of water that came through in such a short period of time,” Burrows said. “It is unimaginable what the victims and survivors went through.”

Amid growing criticism over the state's preparedness and response to the flooding, Abbott emphasized a focus on solutions rather than blame. “The way winners talk is not to point fingers — they talk about solutions,” he told reporters.

State lawmakers are expected to convene for a special legislative session in two weeks to address future preparedness and emergency management strategies for natural disasters.

“We’re going to address every aspect of this storm to make sure that we’re going to have in place the systems that are needed to prevent deadly flooding events in the future,” Abbott said.

Search and recovery teams continue to work around the clock as families await word about their missing loved ones. Authorities urge residents in affected areas to remain cautious as cleanup and investigations continue.
