Marysville, CA — A Northern California family is mourning the loss of a 16-year-old boy who drowned while saving a friend during a summer outing at the Feather River.
The tragic incident occurred on the afternoon of Friday, July 4, near the town of Marysville. According to the Yuba County Sheriff's Office, emergency responders received a call around 5:30 p.m. reporting a possible drowning. Search and rescue teams later recovered the teen’s body on Saturday, July 5, submerged in approximately 17 feet of water.
Authorities have identified the teen as Nathan Drake, a local high school student described by his family as brave and selfless. His older brother, Cameron Atcher, said Drake died a hero, sacrificing his life to save someone else’s.
“He was the bravest kid I’ve ever known,” Atcher told NBC affiliate KCRA.
According to a GoFundMe campaign launched to assist with funeral expenses, what began as a "beautiful" summer day with friends turned tragic when a strong current began pulling one of the group members away. Without hesitation, Drake jumped into the river to help.
While he successfully saved his friend, Drake was swept underwater and never resurfaced.
“I didn’t just lose a brother that day, I lost part of myself,” Atcher wrote in the fundraiser post.
The Yuba County Sheriff’s Office offered condolences in a public statement:
“Our thoughts and prayers remain with Nathan’s loved ones and all who were affected by this heartbreaking event.”
As the Marysville community rallies around the grieving family, Drake is being remembered not only for his bravery, but for the love he showed others — even at the cost of his own life.

Drake, a student from Marysville, is being remembered as a courageous young man with aspirations of serving his country.
“He wanted to become a Marine when he was old enough,” his family told KCRA.
Although he never had the chance to fulfill that dream, his final act reflected the values of service and sacrifice he hoped to live by.
“He never got to serve, but he died a hero,” said his sister-in-law, Sara Atcher. “He saved another child’s life. A mom gets to hug her son tonight when they go to bed because of Nathan.”
His older brother, Cameron Atcher, shared on a GoFundMe page that the day had begun as a “beautiful” outing with friends, but turned tragic when one of them was caught in the river’s current. Drake jumped in and managed to save the friend, but was pulled underwater himself.
