A family in England is mourning the tragic loss of their 14-year-old son, who died last week after entering a river while playing with his twin brother and friends.
On Wednesday, July 2, Suffolk Constabulary confirmed that the body of a teenage boy had been recovered from the River Waveney in the town of Beccles. Authorities said the teen had entered the river with friends earlier that evening but failed to resurface.
Emergency services were called to Beccles Quay, off Fen Lane, just before 7:30 p.m. A large-scale, multi-agency response was launched, involving Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service, East of England Ambulance Service, an air ambulance crew, HM Coastguard, and police personnel.
The boy’s body was later located and recovered from the river, Suffolk Constabulary confirmed.
He has since been identified as 14-year-old Nischay Patel. Police stated that his death is not being treated as suspicious.
In a statement shared by a local town official, Nischay’s parents, Ketan and Praptiben Patel, expressed their grief and gratitude, thanking emergency responders for their "swift and compassionate response." They also acknowledged the "kindness, love, and support" shown to their family during the difficult time.

A family in England is mourning the tragic loss of their 14-year-old son, Nischay Patel, who died last week after entering the River Waveney while playing with his twin brother and friends.
On Wednesday, July 2, Suffolk Constabulary confirmed that the body of a teenage boy had been recovered from the river in the town of Beccles. The teenager had entered the water near Beccles Quay, off Fen Lane, but failed to resurface.
Emergency services, including Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service, the East of England Ambulance Service, an air ambulance crew, HM Coastguard, and Suffolk police, launched a multi-agency search and rescue operation. Nischay’s body was located and recovered later that evening.
Authorities confirmed that his death is not being treated as suspicious.
In a heartfelt statement shared by a local town official, Nischay's parents, Ketan and Praptiben Patel, expressed their profound grief and gratitude:
“The outpouring of sympathy — from kind words and beautiful flowers to thoughtful gestures — has brought immense comfort to our family,” they said.
“This loss is unimaginable, and as we grieve, we hold close the love of our friends, family, and customers. Your compassion has touched our hearts more deeply than words can express. To everyone who has supported our family — particularly the emergency services and those who went above and beyond — please accept our sincerest gratitude.
As we take time to process this tragedy, we kindly ask for privacy and space, knowing your continued support surrounds us.”
Nischay was a student at Sir John Leman High School in Beccles, which has since arranged counseling and emotional support for students and staff affected by the tragedy. According to ITV News, The Sun, and The Mirror, he had been playing with his twin brother, Niyam, at the time of the incident.
Community members have also rallied in support of the Patel family. Family friend Layla Eales, who has launched a fundraiser alongside Terri Bird, spoke to the BBC:
“It makes your heart drop — you instantly think of the parents and really feel for them, especially when you are a parent yourself and it's your local community. I saw the kids sitting there, heartbroken, and you feel helpless.”
Terri Bird added,
“We knew that it would be someone we knew — it's a small town, everybody knows everybody. Your thoughts go straight to the family. To think you let your child out to play and they never come home — it's devastating.”
